What stands out about Gefner’s parshios is that the letters are made very nicely and the writing is thin. People ask me if that is good or bad and I explain that there are soferim that it’s better for them to write thin and there are other soferim that if they try to write thinner lines, nothing looks right. Those soferim need to write thick. If the writing gets too thin or thick, it will not be good writing. If it is too thin, it will look like the thin lines are broken. If it is too thick, everything will look like it’s touching, and squashed together. This sofer does a nice job of writing thin letters but to a certain degree, it’s a personal thing. Some people naturally gravitate to thinner writing and some people to thicker writing. There is nothing wrong with either preference as long as the writing doesn’t get too extreme. Additionally, by thin writing, I do not mean stick figure writing, or writing the way it would come out with a ballpoint pen. I mean thin writing that has both thick and thin lines like all proper safrus. Also, the thin lines are not to be just one stroke of the tip of the pen, but two strokes. This aspect of double lines for all the thin lines in a given letter is common to all thicknesses of safrus lettering. Study the picture and you’ll see what I mean.
