The tanning of the leather that these battim are made from is avodas yad. The squaring of the bayis is not avodas yad. Many poskim feel that the small use of electricity in creating these battim does not make them ‘machine made’, and they retain their status of avodas yad. The shin is also avodas yad. These battim are prudos (seperated), meaning that the four compartments of the shel rosh are separated all the way to the bottom, with no glue to hold them together, just as the avodas yad is made. Practically and in halacha there is very little difference between these battim and avodas yad battim, so if you want good battim, and you want your tefillin to be considered mehudar, purchase these battim and good parshios, and you will have a very nice, and mehudar set of tefillin

These battim are made completly by hand and are painted by my battim macher locally. This insures an extra level of kashrus, as any flaws in the battim are visible before painting, and can be dealt with appropriately, or rejected if they don’t meet my standards.
