The Real Tunisian/Turkish Tallit (aka Echt Terkish) is woven from especially thick wool yarn, exactly like the prayer shawls that were produced in Tunis over 150 years ago. This tallis is about 6 ounces heavier than a Tallis Hamefoar of the same size it’s every bit it’s equal when it comes to softness. The extra weight and more distinct ridges in the weave of a Turkish tallis gives it a more traditional and authentic feeling then a tallis from the HaMefoar series, but that’s because the HaMafoar series was designed to have a more refined feel. A Turkish tallis is for the person that likes a more ‘hand made’ feeling and can tolerate the extra insulation that this tallis will provide. It will be hotter to wear in the summer, so if you struggle with keeping cool during the hot weather, this may not be the tallis for you. On the other hand, if you doven in a cold shul in the winter, or if you’re always cold, you’ve found your tallis. I heard it said, “that a worshipper wrapped in a real Turkish prayer shawl feels the weight of the Mitzvahs on his shoulder,” and I can believe it.
The Talit comes with a lining and side reinforcements adding many years to the durability of the prayer shawl, and is finished with a double knot on the fringes which adds a touch of elegance to its traditional feel. You can see both the lining and the double knot on the fringes, as well as a close up of the line pattern and the weave in the galley pictures.
